We have chosen to spend most of the week out on the trail, building confidence in our relationship in an environment Kai is a quite at ease with. While out on the trail, it is not all mindless riding, there is always some skill that can be built upon. In our case we have a lot of saltbush over here, where we can practice getting our circles even, changing reins and improving on the other side. We can also use the bush to improve the direction over the hindquarters and shoulders. Whilst riding out, we do still spend times of relaxed riding which also benefits Kai, allowing him to relax, with intermittent bursts of varying gates, manoeuvring around, through and over natural obstacles, seeing kangaroos, emus, wombats(at the right time of day, they like to try and avoid me), and a variety of birds. The fun is endless for us both, Kai really seems to enjoy riding out and is often reluctant to turn around and come back home.
Kai and I have also spent some time working at liberty in the round yard this week. I like to occasionally check in with my horse and the work at liberty helps me to make sure that the horse is with me 100%, without the need for a lead rope or a bridle rein. It also helps confirm the fact that we are building confidence together as a team, as well as trust in each other as partners.
Towards the end of the week, before one of our rides, I thought I'd check in and see how Kai was progressing with the man made obstacles that seemed all so scary the week before. Now that Kai’s trust is continuing to build and develop in what I am asking him to do, I was real happy with the progress and even managed a few photos on the iPad. Hope you enjoy.
Yippie Kai Yay, Brumby friends!!!!
