Australian Brumby Challenge

As part of our ongoing mission to showcase the beauty and versatility of our Brumbies but also continuing to be very mindful of their welfare, we have decided to introduce the Brumby Yearling Challenge!

While in the past we have held yearling classes as part of the Australian Brumby Challenge we felt that 4 days at EQUITANA was simply too much for our young Brumbies and also for our young trainers. We are still very keen to have young trainers participate in an event to test their skills and have the opportunity to train a young Brumby. As such we are introducing the Brumby Yearling Challenge.

This years event will be small with only 8 yearlings available and will be open to both youth and adult trainers and specifically for this event a "team" class. If the Brumby Yearling Challenge proves to be popular and successful we will consider more entries in the future and / or holding the event every year rather than every 2 years.

As with all our Brumbies, the Brumbies in the Brumby Yearling Challenge event were either born or conceived in the wild. They have all had appropriate vet treatment (microchips, worming etc) and all colts have been gelded, however, they are completely unhandled.

We have three classes for this event – Junior, for trainers aged 10 – 17 years (supported by a mentor/ supervisor), Adult, for trainers aged 18 years plus and a Team class for Juniors who attend a recognised riding school or club and don’t own their own horses. Teams will consist of three, will have one mentor/ supervisor and each junior must show the yearling Brumby in one of the finals classes.!

Unlike the Australian Brumby Challenge, the Brumbies in the Brumby Yearling Challenge, will not be auctioned at the end of the event. Instead, Brumbies trained through this program are available to their trainers to purchase for $750 at the completion of the event (less the $150 entrance fee). Those Brumbies not purchased by their trainers at the completion of the event will return to the Brumby Junction Sanctuary until they too find their forever homes.

The Brumby Yearling Challenge will commence with pickup at our Brumby Junction Sanctuary in Glenlogie Victoria on Saturday the 3rd of August, 2019, approved trainers will take their nominated Brumby home for 99 days, returning to the Brumby Festival in the Yarra Valley on Sunday the 10th of November, 2019 for three finals classes.
